Report Back Flyer

Community, educators, supporters, donors, family and friends!

You are invited to join us next Weds, 1/13, for a special presentation by the ESLI Youth Delegation to the UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen!  Delegates Gier Hernandez (Burton High School) and Lupita Troncoso (Abraham Lincoln High School) traveled to Copenhagen this past December as young leaders and activists who met with others from around the world to urge our leaders to take action on climate change.  In their report-back they will showcase and discuss what happened on this incredible, eye-opening trip and what lessons were learned.  A question and answer session will follow.  We are excited to share our experience with our supporters and our community!

Please RSVP if you can make it to ellen@eslisf.org.  This event is open to the public, and we are accepting $5-25 sliding scale donations to cover the remaining costs of our trip.  Students with ID are free, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.  Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Thank you and see you then!

ESLI Youth Depart to Copenhagen!

Dear Supporters, Family and Friends:

As we hear constant updates this week in the news about the UN climate negotiations in Copenhagen, it’s hard to believe that we will be there ourselves tomorrow morning!  From what it sounds like, the threat of a weak or no agreement in Copenhagen makes this call to action to join the international community at this historic event more important than ever.  We are excited and humbled by the responsibility we carry during the next 7 days.  As youth, we will be standing in solidarity with other young activists from around the world to fight for our future.  Coming from the United States, we will be joining arms with impacted communities from around the world to show the world that though our leadership continues to stall the negotiations, there are citizens within our own borders fighting for an answer to climate change.  And as members of our San Francisco and Bay Area communities (currently experiencing a record cold winter) we will share your stories and your spirit of activism, as well as share our experience with you!

We owe a HUGE thank you to all of our donors and supporters, to ESLI and to Global Exchange for giving us this opportunity. Also, a special recognition to the teachers, families and friends of Gier Hernandez and Lupita Troncoso for their support.

To keep in touch we will be reporting live daily from Copenhagen! Please feel free to comment on any or all of our blog posts, even just to send us messages of support!

Also, upon our return, we are planning a report-back event for the first week of January to present on our experience in Copenhagen. Please check ESLI’s website for more updated information soon.

Many thanks and much love,

The ESLI Youth Delegation to Copenhagen:
Gier Hernandez, Lupita Troncoso and Ellen Choy (adult leader)

YAb at Green Festival

The ESLI Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is comprised of students from all seven participating ESLI schools. In partnership with ESLI adult staff, the Youth Advisory Board plans community events throughout the school year, while gaining leadership and environmental service skills. In addition to the Youth Unity Challenge at the SF Green Festival, the 2009-2010 Youth Advisory Board will plan ESLI’s annual Teachers Conference, the summer Outdoor Trip and our biggest event: the 2010 SF Eco-Fest! The SF Eco-Fest is a city-wide youth festival of music, art, project showcases and workshops – highlighting and promoting green issues in ways that actually relate to our youth generation. Additionally, the YAB will be hosting a community report back by participating youth at side events and meetings surrounding climate negotiations in Copenhagen.

The 2009-2010 ESLI Youth Advisory Board includes:

Meagan Le and Courtney Lee of Lowell High School; Naniloa Casteel of Independence High School; Diana Chiu and Christina Cai of Washington High School; DeAnthony Jones of Mission High School; Lupita Troncoso, Griselda Ruiz, Paul Pascual, and Nesta Yip of Lincoln High School; Gier Hernandez of Burton High School; and Isabel Wang of Galileo High School
